Renewable Energy and Advanced Energy Infrastructure Case Histories
Carmen Group helped Saft secure a $95.5 million grant, which represents the only ARRA Battery Manufacturing Initiative award for the production of lithium ion batteries for military hybrid vehicles, aviation, smart grid support, broadband backup power, and energy storage for renewable energy. The project creates 800 construction jobs and upon completion will support 279 full time, green technology jobs in Florida.
Carmen Group advised Saft on all aspects of the project, including the location of the factory given ARRA politics, critical cost share recommendations to Saft leadership, and competitive differentiation of Saft’s application in order to ensure the best possible consideration by DOE evaluators. Carmen Group professionals utilized their expertise to help draft key language and manage the grant application process, including actively working with Saft’s Congressional delegation to secure critical support for the application and pressing for an expanded emphasis of the grant program beyond hybrid and electric vehicles.
Carmen Group helped Pepco Holdings Inc. (PHI), a large regional Investor Owned Utility, secure a total of $168 million for three separate smart grid projects in Maryland, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia.
The Carmen team worked closely with PHI leadership to develop multiple grant applications for the Department of Energy’s Smart Grid Investment Grant Program. Carmen Group professionals utilized their expertise to provide PHI with critical drafting and strategic information regarding the individual project applications and worked to ensure that each of PHI’s projects stood out from the crowd of applications.
Carmen Group helped a coalition of six electric cooperatives in South Mississippi, led by the South Mississippi Electric Power Association (SMEPA), secure a $30 million Department of Energy Grant to bring smart grid to two-thirds of Mississippi, including some of the poorest communities in the nation.
Carmen Group professionals utilized their understanding of the DOE grant process, and facilitation and leadership skills to bring together a coalition of independent rural electric cooperatives in Southern Mississippi to create a powerful application for the Smart Grid Investment Grant Program. The Carmen team help draft and create an application in which the key aspects of each regional smart grid project were highlighted, and identified specific efficiencies gained as a result of the teaming of the cooperatives on the smart grid project. Based on the technical abilities of our staff and the unique understanding of the DOE grant process, our professionals were able to draft a compelling application that rose above the others, provide critical strategic support for the application, and secure a significant win for this rural area.
